Please! Someone tell me the truth about these tractors. Are they a) worth their price (3-6K around here)b) do they hold up and c) parts.....available and easy to get.
I'm buying my first tractor and am very, very tempted to go with a YANMAR because of the price. I'm a very confused consumer who has a little time before I HAVE to have a tractor (with loader, minimum equipment.
All honest responses welcome. Please, no jerkin' me around if you don't mind.

Regarding the question of whether the Yanmars are worth the price? My place of employment has a Yanmar (made for America) they have had for 15 years. I have no idea of the total acreage that has to be mowed, but I assure you it is large. Just a guess but probably between 200 and 300 acres, probably more. (Incidentally this acreage is rough, hilly terrain too.) They pull a 5 foot finish mower with it. The shop foreman told me recently that in 15 years it has never had a major breakdown. All that's been done to it is routine maintenance. That was good enough for me, so I bought one from a local guy. I absolutely love operating it. I bought the M1500D. I have a 5 foot finish mower, and a 4 foot rough mower for it. I hope in the spring to add a single bottom breaking plow, and a 4 foot roto tiller. Just yesterday, I mowed one of my uncle's yards, then came home and mowed mine. Later in the evening I put the rough mower on it and did some brush hogging. Would I recommend a Yanmar? You bet. Mine does all I ask it too, and appears to be capable of so much more. My opinion is that the Yanmar's are probably one of the best bargains in the tractor world. ....

Hello Capt,
I've sold about 100 Yanmars in the last couple years and we have yet to have any significant problems. There are a few problems that are fairly common, such as front seal leaks on the 4wd models and voltage regulators (more properly, bridge rectifiers), but other than that they are fairly bullet-proof. We check these items and replace them before the sale if needed and it isn't a big deal. There are a lot of guys with parts and we have yet to find a part that we could not get. Occasionally we will have to order a part from Japan, but that is not the norm. You will find that many local dealers will talk down on the gray market tractors, mostly because of parts problems, and the fact that the gray market business is cutting into their sales. If you have a parts book for the tractor and have a list of a few Yanmar used and new parts guys, you should be able to get almost any part. Sometimes it takes a little effort. Some parts are common to John Deere, although not many. Many gray market parts are common to the USA Yanmar models for which parts are readily available. Some parts are unique to the Japanese models (such as PTO parts) and you need to find these used or have them ordered from Japan. If you run a mower with a Yanmar, buy an over-running PTO clutch (about $60) so the mower does not try to push the tractor when stopping.

You are better off with an older half wornout Yanmar than a new Chinese tractor. Not meaning to offend anyone, but I believe that to be true. ....

I currently own a Yanmar 2220D 4x4 (for over a year). I have found it very durable and very fuel efficent. It handles a 54 tiller and a 5 foot bush hog. It actually handles the bush hog better than our IH 50hp handles a 6 foot bush hog. But its probably time for another overhaul on the IH. After looking at several tractors it came down to the Yanmar and the Mistubishi with the speed shift the deciding factor in the Yanmars favor. I also have a Kelly hydo trencher that is really a load for this tractor, creeper split by the speed shift helps as I do have to shift into "N" occasionally (no spell check). Overall I'd give it an A+, may eventually trade it in on another Yanmar of about 32hp. Parts can be found, may have to wait a bit, used to waiting on the IH, it was made in England. Hope this helps, I don't sell em, just use em. ....
